Heather Maloney is the third album for a songwriter hailed by The Huffington Post for “terrific lyrics that cut to the chase”, while DigBoston wrote that she “deserves the type of cult following that has allowed the likes of Aimee Mann and Ani DiFranco that long standing success and influence they have had.” Maloney marks life lessons on this album, penning tuneful reminders to herself about the little triumphs of love on “Flutter,” the solace of redemption on “Turn Yourself Around” and her firm belief that nothing’s colder than trying too hard to be cool, an idea that inspired “Fire for You.” Although Maloney’s influences are largely rooted in what she calls “adventurous folk,” she pushes outward on these 11 songs, digging deeper, and roaming wider, than she has before on songs populated by vivid characters that ultimately trace their way back to her.

She Shines Love in Every Song She Sings

Heather Maloney 2013

“I always said that if I didn’t write songs, I’d be covered in tattoos, because every song I write is something I want to remember really badly,” says Heather Maloney.

Heather had one of her first public shows at a small coffee shop in Northampton Massachusetts in September of 2009. She was so nervous and timid that she had to be prodded onto the stage. In July of 2011 she walked out onto the stage at the Calvin Theater in front of 1,500 fans of the Grammy Award winning artist Jonny Lang, and brought them to their feet in applause. Jonny immediately asked her to open three more shows and called her “an extremely talented songwriter and incredibly great singer.” Heather has fallen in love with performing, having played over 225 shows in 20 states in 20 months, sharing the stage with such celebrated acts as Jonny Lang, Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriquez, Mike & Ruthy, Vance Gilbert, Dala, David Wax Museum, Devil Makes Three, Caravan of Thieves, Jeffrey Gaines, Jill Sobule, Meg Hutchinson, Cliff Eberhardt and many others.

As a new songwriter, there is already an abundance of press response, calling her lyrics "Terrific" (Huffington Post), "Poignant" (Portsmouth Herald), and "Powerful" (Rochester City News). As a classically trained vocalist who once aimed for the opera, there is an apparent strength and certainty in her voice that provides a solid foundation for the "unfettered" (Intelligencer Journal) vocal playfulness throughout her work. Heather’s title track and name of her debut album, Cozy Razor's Edge was voted by WRSI 93.9 The River listeners as one of the best songs of 2009, Worcester Magazine calls it “stunning folk-rock”, and Connecticut's Middletown Press says "(Cozy Razors Edge) highlights her nearly unlimited vocal range and ability to write melodic tunes that somehow ride the line between playful folk/pop and depth-defying soul."

'Heather Maloney' is the acclaimed songwriter's self-titled debut for Signature Sounds. The western Massachusetts based artist has received numerous accolades for her startlingly soulful voice and literate songwriting exploring themes of spirituality, transformation, and impermanence.

Early Praise for Heather Maloney:

"Her music is riveting, her voice adventurous, her lyrics thought-provoking... her expansive range can handle Ella Fitzgerald-style jazz scat and adapt to Beatlesque pop or Joni Mitchell folk..."  - NO DEPRESSION

"Maloney's Signature Sounds debut is a treasure trove of self and collective discovery."    - FAME

"Filled with harmonies, intimate lyrics and a unique blend of influences, Maloney’s music belongs to a genre all its own."  - Daily Hampshire Gazette

Hidden Talent? Get to Know Heather Maloney

by Michael Bialas

One of the joys about covering music in my spare time is hearing a singer-songwriter or band for the first time, not having any preconceived notions or prior knowledge of their work. With mounds of sounds stacking up, for whatever reason you dig deep to find the one CD that arrived unsolicited in the mail. Before reaching the end of the opening song...

It’s like finding buried treasure. The odds of that happening are slim, but when it does, you feel compelled to tell the world what you’ve just uncovered.

So if you haven’t had the pleasure to meet her already, consider this a proper introduction to Heather Maloney, whose self-titled record, her first for Signature Sounds, comes out Tuesday (March 12). A CD release show will be held March 16 at the Shea Theater in the western Massachusetts town of Turners Falls, about 30 miles north of her Northampton residence.
